These images are pictures I've found on the web.  Some are nose art while others are just cool pictures.
  •  Bow shot of a 91st Group B-17G.  Number 2 is losing a little oil.  Looks like he's been in the air for a while.  Check out the patchwork ground below the aircraft.

  •  A 91st Group B-17G in formation.

  •  An overhead shot of the Bassingbourn airfield.  Dad flew all his missions from here.  This photo was taken in 1955 by the RAF.  The little circles are hardstands where the bombers were parked.  The pilots then taxied them to take-off position.  See "Maximum Effort" below.

  •  Bassingbourn airfield today.  This photo was taken from Google Earth in 2005.  Compare it with the photo above.  It looks like the hanger on the right has been turned into offices.  It's now a base for the British Army.  The runways have been shortened but the taxiways have remained.

  •  Cheri nose art. This is the original nose are for "Cheri".  Its a little washed out.  Nothing I can do for it.

  •  Cheri II nose art. This is the nose are on Dad's plane.  The circle behind the figure is actually sky blue.

  • Matrimony Preferred.  This is the Esquire gatefold from June 1944 on which the "Cheri" and "Cheri II" nose art are based.  I can't believe I actually found this!

  • Matrimony Preferred - 2.  This is a scan from the calendar that Esquire released with the 1944 artwork. It's a bit cleaner than the gatefold image above.  Click on the image to get a larger view.

  •  Maximum Effort.  Maximum Effort meant that everything that flew, went.  And the ground crew worked extra to make sure everything flew.  Just above the tail of the B-17 in the foreground is a P-47 Thunderbolt.  Check out "Bassingbourn" above.  There are four huge hangers arranged in a semi-circle.  This photo is taken from the one on the right.  Just above the P-47 is the tower with three ambulances standing by.  There's a P-51 Mustang just above the tail of the B-17 on the left.  Would you look at those clouds!  Just a typical day in England!

  •  Overhead view.  This is a color photo of an overhead view of a B-17 from the 388th Bomb Group (the H) from the 3rd Air Division (the square on the tail).  Look at the shadows of all the other B-17's in formation.

  •  The build up.  Fortresses by the hundreds!  Lined-up and ready to go.

  •  OR-W in flight.  This is in color!  It may not be Dad's plane because the serial number on the tail can't be seen.  Oh, well.  I say it's Dad driving!

  •  OR-W in formation.  This is definitely Dad's plane!  Just above the "W" on the tail you can make out "48431".  That's the "short version" of the serial number which is "44-8431".  Yes, those black splotches in front of OR-W are flak (anti-aircraft artillery).  The B-17 in the lower right has it's bomb bay doors open.  Which means they're just starting or just finishing their bomb run.  Either way, it's a long time before debriefing, chow and some sleep.  Thanks, Dad.
